In the eastern rite the priest approaches the Altar of Sacrifice with the words, "Now is the time for God to act." These words remind the faithful that in the Liturgy the substance of bread and wine is changed by the action of the Spirit into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ and that, as we receive the Energy of the Triune God in the Mystery of the Blessed Sacrament, it is the Sanctifier who acts to change our very being, restoring in us the Image of that which we receive.

In the holy cards of the 1800's, small birds frequently gathered. In the visual poetry that the artist's created, the dove, or the small white bird, was symbolic, a visual metaphor that represented the soul of the believer. They were variously titled, but can perhaps be best described as God's little friends.

The metaphor of the small bird, fragile yet filled with exuberance and drawn by simple, childlike faith to the Source of all goodness, was used to illustrate the soul's relationship to the Savior, the Virgin Mary, and all the company of heaven. Like lambs, the doves who flocked to Our Lord were trusting, simple, and sweet. As we draw near to them, we feel God's love.

Drawing on the inspired word of the Bible and the writings of the saints, the artists worked with the image of the small bird in ways that were theologically grounded showing the soul as fragile, always in need of God's care but never abandoned; this concept was depicted in a seemingly endless variety of ways that spoke directly to the heart.

We invite you to share our delight in these little creatures of the faith drawn from the hearts of artists and writers who, even today, assist us on our journey. I hope you enjoy their presence in your life as much as we do.
