St. John the Baptist: Solemnity, June 24

There is much to contemplate in this image of the Baptist:

The Baptist, depicted as a living bridge, presents Christ, true God and true man, to the waiting world. His eyes are cast down to direct attention away from himself to his Saviour.

Jesus, as he begins His ministry,  looks to the Father, seeking His will in all He must do in the work of Redemption...

The Light of Christ informs and regenerates creation...

Mirrored in both the swan floating serenely on the waters of death and also in the rock from which the all-powerful waters of regeneration spring, Christ embraces the the dove, symbol of the soul entrusted to His care.

To detach myself from creatures
to look for God, I rest in God himself...
This is the whole interior Life.

In the eastern rite the priest approaches the Altar  of Sacrifice with the words, "Now is the time for God to act."   These  words remind the faithful that in the Liturgy the substance of bread and  wine is changed by the action of the Spirit into the Body and Blood of  Jesus Christ and that, as we receive the Energy of the Triune God in the  Mystery of the Blessed Sacrament, it is the Sanctifier who acts to  change our very being, restoring in us the Image of that which we  receive.
